PIGEON FORGE -- Sevier County fire officials are counting on an expected significant rain today to deal the death blow to a stubborn wildfire that had damaged or destroyed 65 structures and charred 160 acres by noon.

The fire roared through dozens of log rental cabins in the Black Bear Ridge Resort, which is situated in the hills near Pigeon Forge.

Emergency personnel from as many as 25 area agencies responded to the blaze, which broke out in late afternoon Sunday and spurred the voluntary evacuation of 150 people from threatened cabins and homes.

Jay Breeden, Sevier County fire marshal, said the fire broke out below a couple of cabins on Long Branch Road, destroyed them and quickly jumped the road and cut a swath up the hillside toward more structures.
