A Johnson City mall store employee was arrested Monday on a charge that she made $6,700 in false returns and placed the money on gift cards in recent months.

Julia L. Wilson, 23, 153 Cagle Road, Bluff City, was charged with theft of property over $1,000.

Police were called to Belk in the Mall at Johnson City after loss prevention employees conducted an investigation into embezzlement. Wilson admitted to using Belk merchandise to make false returns and placing the return amounts onto gift cards, which she used over the past four months, police said in a news release.

She told police she embezzled more than $6,700.

Wilson was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $10,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance Tuesday.
