ELIZABETHTON — Three people were injured in a two-truck crash on the old Elizabethton Highway late Friday, and charges were pending, Elizabethton police announced this morning in a news release.

The crash happened just before midnight on Tenn. Highway 91 near Happy Valley Memorial Park.

An eastbound GMC Sierra pickup driven by Stormey Shepherd, 23, 262 Lacy Hollow Road, collided head-on with a westbound Chevrolet 1500 driven by Melissa Robin Carter, 45, 1684 Highway 19 E.

Both Melissa Carter and her passenger, Penny Lenore Carter, 44, also of 1684 Highway 19 E, had to be extricated from the truck by the Carter County Rescue Squad and the Elizabethton Fire Department.

Both drivers and Penny Carter were taken by ambulance to Johnson City Medical Center.

Melissa Carter remained in JCMC this morning in stable condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Information regarding Penny Carter and Shepherd was not available.

Police said the Accident Reconstruction Team determined that Shepherd's truck crossed the center line and struck the other truck nearly head-on. Evidence was collected to be sent to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Lab for analysis.

The crash's cause remained under investigation, and charges were pending.
