The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the death of an inmate at the Washington County Detention Center on Friday afternoon.
According to a release from Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal, Jay William Davis, 39, 151 Ridgecrest Road, Jonesborough, died late Friday at the detention center.
Graybeal said foul play is not suspected in Davis’ death.
Davis was being held in the center on domestic assault charges.

What could cause the sudden death of a healthy 39 year old man other than foul play?

Arby, the reporting at the Press has really gone downhill. Not only did they fail to include this information in the article, they probably didn't even think to ask.

Personally I find it very difficult to believe that a 39 yr old man died of natural causes. Foul play sounds more like it, and from what I hear of the guards at the wash. co. jail beating people up whenever they get the notion, makes it even harder to believe he died of natural causes. Just saying. I have heard too many horror stories of how the inmates are being treated there because the guards are nothing but inbred bullies and have gotten away with it for so long it'll probably never end.

We need independent oversight of all law enforcement, including jailers. It is such a huge joke in this country that every single crime committed by a member of our police forces is investigated by the criminal's colleagues.

If beating was a result of this young man's death, where was the 24 hour nursing staff to check and make sure this gentleman was ok? These jail nurses completely have the responsibilty to make sure inmates get the proper care and make sure they are ok in events such as this. If this inmate was beaten, on medication or deathly sick and it was this severe, why wasn't this he sent out to the hospital to be treated???

really?? no where in the article does it say he died of "natural causes". its people like "u4real" and "dp" that get rumors started that are not even close to the truth.

From the article
"Graybeal said foul play is not suspected in Davis’ death."
If not foul play...
Pay attention indeed.

pay attention, i just made a broad statement. what people think on this matter is already their opinion. ive lived in this area over 40 years long enough to see many people die in the custody of the washington co. sherriffs dept. and they truly do not have a good reputation. i'm not saying that they were neglegent in some way, but if they were you wouldnt read it it this paper anyway.

I was related to the man and I can tell you he was in perfect health. He looked like he was chiseled from iron with his body build and has worked very hard in construction every day of his life. To me there is definately something very strange and unusual about his death.

It could have been a possible suicide

Just because someone appears healthy on the outside doesn't mean he is on the inside. The best way to avoid this situation is not to break the law and end up in jail. It's as simple as that. My condolences to the man's family and friends. I am sure they think this guy is terrific. As for me, I respect no one who beats up women, if in fact this man did, or children, animals or the elderly. I don't understand why it's so difficult these days for people to steer clear of the law. Too many people are self-absorbed and full of rage and can't properly deal with their problems or living situations. I hope the TBi can discover what really happened.

Ya know, Washington County jail must be pretty terrific because if you look at the arrest report and/or "Busted" you see the same people who go back over and over. They must like it a lot.
