A North Carolina man who reportedly tried to eat fake bills stored in his shoe after being confronted by police faces numerous counterfeit charges, along with another man and a minor who were with him.
Johnson City police received a call from IHOP, 3214 Peoples St., early Wednesday claiming some customers tried to pass a counterfeit bill but fled after employees became suspicious, according to a news release.
A court document indicated one of the men ordered pancakes to go and tried to pay with a $50 bill the cashier thought looked fake.
Police said in the release these two men and the juvenile male then went to McDonald’s, 2101 North Roan St., and bought food with fake money.
Court documents allege the three pulled through the restaurant’s drive-thru and gave the cashier a fake $50 bill to pay for their order.
The employee told the driver to pull around so change could be made for the $50.
McDonald’s employees called police, who confronted the men, identified as Michael Keith Herron, 46, 43 N. College St., and Adam Kirk Dillingham, 30, 2 Sprousetown Road, both of Weaverville, N.C. The boy was also from Weaverville.
Police said in the news release all three had counterfeit bills.
A search of the vehicle yielded seven counterfeit $20 bills bearing the same serial number.
Court documents said that in the interview room at police headquarters, Dillingham removed 11 fake $50 bills and 5 fake $20 bills hidden in his shoe and tried to eat them, but officers prevented him from swallowing. Police said in the court document all those bills had the same serial number.
Herron was charged with seven counts of criminal simulation.
Dillingham was charged with 24 counts of criminal simulation and one count of tampering with evidence.
Both men were charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The juvenile was charged with 11 counts of criminal simulation.
Both adults were being held in the Washington County Detention Center — Dillingham on $85,000 bond and Herron on $22,000 bond. They were scheduled to appear in Sessions Court Wednesday.
The juvenile was released to his legal guardian and was scheduled to be in Johnson City Juvenile Court Jan. 18.
