ALGOOD (AP) — Police in Algood say the shooting of a 15-year-old black boy, reported as a possible hate crime, was a hoax.
Officers in the Putnam County town say two women have been arrested and more arrests are expected. One woman is charged with filing a false report and the other with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Police said the boy, a runaway from Bolivar, Tenn., was shot in the leg May 17, but the shooting did not take place on the street, as he claimed, and there is no evidence that racism was involved.
According to the Cookeville Herald-Citizen, details of the shooting have not been disclosed.
Juvenile petitions have been obtained against the boy for filing a false police report. The boy has since been returned to his hometown, where he faced other charges.
