Billy Bridges, 65, of Franklin, remains in custody in West Tennessee where police say he lay in wait for his wife at an Interstate 40 rest stop then shot and stabbed her to death.

Bridges has been charged with first-degree murder in the death Monday of his estranged wife, Eva Bridges, 66, at the westbound rest area in Benton County near mile marker 131.

Witnesses have said Billy Bridges approached his wife as she returned to her car at about 11:30 a.m. and fired several shots from a small caliber handgun. He then stabbed her in the throat with a large knife, police say.
