Child struck by vehicle on Knob Creek Road

Washington County 911 Dispatchers received the call early Wednesday afternoon that a child had been hit by a car on Knob Creek road. When crews arrived on the scene they found 11-year-old Corey Austin lying in the road as neighbors and family rushed to his aid. Corey’s brother Randy was right beside him when Corey suddenly ran into the road.

“We were crossing the street from our friend’s house and we were just talking,” Randall Austin said. “The last thing I knew I was walking and then running, my brother didn’t look both ways and he just ran. The car honked it’s horn and Corey just turned his head and he got hit. He flew 10 feet backwards.”

There were several people along the street, which is normal for that time of day along Knob Creek, neighbors made calls to 911 as Randy ran to get his parents in their home nearby.

“My neighbor ran up to my brother and I ran up to my house really fast without even breathing,” Randy said. “I ran up to my mom’s house and told her my brother had been hit by a car. We started running and she started crying and then she got my dad and he came with us as the ambulance showed up.”

As of 8pm on Wednesday, Johnson City Police had not been able to complete the incident report. The name of the driver who struck Corey Austin is not yet available. According to friends and family Corey seemed as though he was going to be OK after medical treatment. Neighbors also told the Johnson City Press that many of the neighborhood kids dart into the road in that area of Knob Creek without looking, and they hope the kids have learned a valuable lesson.

Corey Austin was listed in stable condition this morning at Johnson City Medical Center.
