Signs posted at the 5-acre property Thursday announced a potential rezoning, and list a number for the Johnson City Planning Department to inquire for more information.
City Planner Steve Neilson said Thursday afternoon that he didn’t work much with rezoning efforts, and couldn’t provide much information about the property.
“I can’t tell you a whole lot, but I know there’s a request to rezone it as commercial,” he said. “The site plan is very schematic in nature.”
Currently a residential property, Neilson said the rezoning question would likely come before the Johnson City Regional Planning Commission on July 8, and if the commission decided to recommend the rezoning, would go to the City Commission at a later date.
Neilson said the real estate broker marketing the property, Bryan Sangid, also identified on Corridor Properties “For Sale” signs on the property, might be able to shed more light on the project.
“I don’t know what’s going on there, I can’t tell you,” Sangid said by phone. “I know the site plan has been submitted to the city, maybe it will be disclosed during the rezoning process.”
Sangid did say he believed the property was under consideration for a change from residential to Supporting Central Business District (B-3).
That zoning overlay allows multiple business uses, from fueling stations and restaurants to hospitals and multi-family dwellings.
In other economic development news, the Washington County Economic Development Council announced a news conference scheduled for Monday, where an occupant for an empty commercial office building could be revealed.
The 10 a.m. news conference will be held at 207 Mockingbird Lane, the former SunTrust Bank office building.
NN Inc., a Johnson City-headquartered manufacturer of automotive components, announced months ago that it was considering expanding its corporate offices, which would bring about 200 high-salary jobs to the city.
There was no official confirmation Thursday that the announcement Monday will be a new headquarters for the manufacturer.
