Has America taken casual attire too far?

Johnson City Press • May 23, 2014 at 8:55 AM

This is Friday, and odds are some of your coworkers are dressed a bit more causally today than they might otherwise be. Causal Friday is a typically American invention. It’s supposed to be a day when employees can let down their hair (so to speak) and display a bit of individualism. Some business consultants now believe casual Fridays have gone too far. They say many employees (and their bosses) dress far too informally every day of the week.A growing number of companies are enforcing rules that set a minimum standard of dress. Traditionalists, of course, applaud the return to more dressed-up attire. Younger employees, however, are not happy with what they see as stuffiness in the workplace. They think flip-flops and Bermuda shorts are completely acceptable as business wear. Many school systems are now enforcing strict dress codes. With their parents wearing their favorite football jerseys to work, is it any wonder that students have adopted an equally casual approach to dressing for school? These laid-back fashion habits are learned in the home and business consultants say they have created a generation of young people who don’t have a clue as to how to appropriately dress for a job interview. It’s not just classrooms and workplaces where the new idea of casual dress has taken root. Signs are posted outside courtrooms now instructing people to put on a shirt with sleeves or pull up their pants before entering. What does it say about our society when defendants (some facing very serious charges) arrive for their day in court dressed in attire better suited for a day at the lake? You can sound off on this topic by telling us if you think casual dress has gone too far.
