Will you be voting in the county GOP Primary?

The early voting period for the May 6 Republican Primary for county offices begins Wednesday and runs through May 1. In Washington County, voters will be asked to decide contested primary battles for County Commission, county mayor, sheriff, county clerk, trustee and circuit court clerk.Contests for local offices rarely draw the number of voters that are seen in a presidential election. Regardless of the turnout, however, it still costs the county the same amount of tax dollars to hold an election. Taxpayers can only get their money’s worth if they show up to the polls.It’s important that you carry some form of approved photo identification when you go to the polls. Acceptable forms of photo ID include driver’s licenses, U.S. passports and government employee identification cards. College photo IDs, however, are not accepted.The last day to register to vote in the May 6 GOP Primary was April 7. If you missed that date, you still have a chance to register to vote in the Aug. 7 county general election and state primary.The deadline for doing so is July 8, but don’t procrastinate. Take care of that business now. Tennesseans have a number of easy options for registering to vote. One is to fill out a form when you renew your driver’s license. Another is to pick up a form at the public library.You must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years or older and a resident of the state to qualify to vote. Tennesseans convicted of felonies are not eligible to vote unless they have had their full citizenship rights properly restored.You can register to vote at the Washington County Election Commission office, or at the county clerk and register of deeds offices.We want to hear from you.
