Mayor election

As you all know, state Rep. Kent Williams has officially announced that he will be running for mayor of Carter County. There are a few things I think the citizens may need to consider before casting their vote: Williams was thrown out of the Republican Party and is now known to them as a “traitor” and “turncoat.” He claims he is a Carter County Republican. There is no such thing. You are Republican, Democrat or an independent.A few months ago, Williams praised Carter County commissioners, telling them they were doing a “good job.” If you’ve been reading this paper, you know that this is far from the truth. At a regional meeting of county commissioners held a few months ago in Jonesborough, state Sen. Rusty Crowe said it would be difficult to get a fish hatchery approved for Carter County because of the project’s political association with Williams. You know the old saying, “What goes around, comes around.” The citizens of Carter County must now suffer as a consequence of Williams’ antics in Nashville. Carter County citizens need to elect a mayor who will be able to get things accomplished, and who is not focused on self interest. In my opinion, Mayor Leon Humphrey is committed to doing what is morally and ethically right. His decisions are based on what is in the best interest of the majority of Carter County citizens, not just the select few. When casting your vote this year, I hope you will do your due diligence and vote for the candidate that will best serve our county. FRANCIS WEBBElizabethton
