SW Virginia manhunt for passenger accused of assaulting deputy ends with capture

ABINGDON, Va. — A man accused of assaulting a Washington County, Va., Sheriff's Office deputy during a traffic stop was caught this morning near Glade Spring after an overnight manhunt.

Jason Simmons, 28, Country Living Lane, Glade Spring, was arrested about 9 a.m. and held without bond.

Simmons was a passenger in a vehicle when Deputy Steve McVey stopped it for an alleged equipment violation. Sheriff Fred Newman said Simmons assaulted the deputy and ran. He was wanted in Wise County on an outstanding capias.

The Sheriff's Office brought in K-9 police dogs and a Virginia State Police medical helicopter to assist in the search for Simmons.

The vehicle's driver, Jeffrey W. Eldreth, Meadowview, was charged with driving on a suspended license, no seat belts and defective equipment (exhaust). He was released on a summons.
