ABINGDON, Va. — Two Tennessee residents have been charged with dumping thousands of tires at two sites in Southwest Virginia.

Brandon Wayne DeFriece, 29, and Nikki Leigh Griffin, 22, both of 943 Wilson Road, Bristol, Tenn., face a total of 19 charges in connection with the discovery of dump sites in Washington County, Va.

Sheriff Fred Newman said the illegal dumpsites were located on Cleveland Road and Slaughter Road and consisted of about 3,050 used waste tires.

“The cost of cleanup to the landowner was approximately $22,000,” Newman said in a news release.

DeFriece and Griffin were each charged with one count of felony disposal of waste tires. Both also faced multiple misdemeanor littering charges — DeFriece nine counts and Griffin eight counts.

DeFriece's bond was $2,500, and Griffin's was $2,000. Both were set to appear in court Feb. 12.
