Too much time is spent fundraising

Staff Report • Oct 21, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Whether you are a conservative, moderate or liberal, or whether you are a tea party member, Republican, Democrat or independent, we should all be able to agree on one thing — our politicians spend too much time and effort raising money from big business to get elected. From our local officials raising thousands of dollars, to our Congress people raising millions of dollars, to the president raising more than $1 billion to get elected. How can these people do the job we pay them to do when they spend their time raising this money from big business and are then beholden to the same big business to do what is best for them instead of what is best for us? How can we fix this? The politicians refuse to change anything. They are afraid that it would give the other side an advantage. The Supreme Court upheld that corporations are the same as people. “Throwing the bums out” and electing all new people won’t fix this because they will just go out and raise money the very same way. Television and newspapers won’t promote this change because they make so much money from political advertisements. The only way to get this fixed are for you and I, the voters, to put aside your political convictions and vote for the person that raises the least amount of money to get elected. It is the only way to show the politicians that this method to get elected must stop now.ALAN MAUTNERJonesborough
