Common Core and size of county commission in Thursday's Forum

Staff Report • Aug 8, 2013 at 9:28 AM

Having attended the Aug. 3 Washington County Republican Party’s quarterly meeting as a delegate, I felt truly sorry for Party Chairman Michael Hartman. He had to preside over a vote to reduce the size of the Washington County Commission, but for some reason, the opposing side misrepresented the decision at hand. The opposing side claimed we were trying to take the vote away from the people. That was not our aim.In fact, a referendum to allow the voters to vote on this issue would be more than welcomed, not unwanted by those of us seeking to reduce the size of the commission. So if the detractors really believe we are trying to take the vote away from the people, I ask that you back up your accusations against us and allow the people to vote on this issue.VINCENT WHITRIGHTLimestoneCommon CoreI spent some time looking at the Common Core standards, particularly mathematics, my field. I don’t know which makes me happier, that I’m not a student or that I’m not a teacher.K.V. HUYCKJohnson City
