Trayvon Martin rally set for Saturday in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE — The organizer of a rally this weekend for Trayvon Martin says there are lessons to be learned from George Zimmerman’s trial and acquittal in the killing of Martin, and he hopes his event will highlight some of those.

“We want to prevent more Trayvons, but also prevent the emergence of more Zimmermans,” Andre Canty, said of his “Justice for Trayvon Martin: Knoxville United Against Racism” rally scheduled for 3-5 p.m. Saturday in Krutch Park in downtown Knoxville.

Canty said he also wants to encourage lawmakers to review “stand your ground” self-defense laws in Tennessee. “While it wasn’t exercised in this case, I think some stand your ground and self-defense laws set a bad precedent and affect African-American males more,” he said.
