A 60-year-old was killed early Saturday in a fire at her mobile home in western Carter County, according to both the Carter County Sheriff’s Department and West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department.
Judy Gail Davis, 60, 108 Joshua Lane off Howard Hyder Road, was killed in the fire, according to Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes.
Mathes said the fire appeared to have started near a wood stove, but the exact cause remained under investigation. He said it appeared that Davis succumbed to the smoke from the fire.
Dennis West, a spokesman for the WCCVFD, said the firefighters had to cut out two walls of the mobile home in order to reach Davis because the home was packed with many items.
West said the fire department received the call about 2:05 a.m. and was on the scene 13 minutes later.
West Carter County was assisted by the Central and Watauga Volunteer Fire Departments in battling the blaze. West said firefighters were on the scene for about four hours.
Mathes said Davis’ body would be sent to East Tennessee State University’s James H. Quillen College of Medicine for an autopsy.
He said the CCSD and the state fire marshal’s office would continue to investigate the fire.
