State and local authorities Wednesday are still investigating the source of a weekend fire on a rural Morgan County junk yard and how the owner came to possess several dozen military mortar shells that were found in the aftermath.
Fire investigators began examining the property Tuesday evening after an Army bomb disposal squad control detonated the World War II-era explosives near the Coalfield residence at 141 Hillbilly Hollow, said Morgan County Sheriff Glen Freytag. It’s still unclear precisely how and where the fire started and whether it was intentionally set, he said.
The property owner, William Provine, told officials that he bought the devices from a scrap metal dealer and that he thought the explosives were rendered harmless, Freytag said.
