Johnson City Police Department officers broke down a man’s door and removed him from his home after witnessing him pull a knife on his landlord and brother on Friday, according to court documents.

Kenneth E. Richards, 49, 108 West Holston Ave., Apt. 2, was charged by police with aggravated assault, aggravated domestic assault and public intoxication.

In the court documents, JCPD Officer James Jenkins said he was called to Richards’ residence for a disturbance.

Officers witnessed Richards approach the landlord Sandra Williams and his brother Fredrick Richards holding a knife in a threatening manner on the porch outside the apartment, according to the report.

“Officers witnessed defendant Kenneth Richards come out of the apartment holding a black handled ... kitchen knife above his head in a stabbing motion,” according to court documents.

Officers drew their guns and Richards ran inside the apartment and locked the door, prompting officers to kick in the door.

It was also reported that officers could smell alcohol on Richards’ breath.

Richards was taken to Johnson City Medical Center after complaining of chest pain but was later cleared.

He was being held in the Washington County Detention Center on $25,500 bond.

Richards is scheduled to appear in Washington County General Sessions Court on Monday.
