PINEY FLATS — Two of East Tennessee State University’s most well known musical groups will be giving their final concerts this weekend at Piney Flats First Baptist Church on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

The 10 Bucs Worth and 12 Times a Lady will perform in the concert appropriately called Close Harmonies.

Professor emeritus Thomas Jenrette formed 10 Bucs Worth in 1989.

Past performances of 10 Bucs Worth have included regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, conventions of the Tennessee Music Educators Association and the Music Educators National Conference, and national conventions of the Intercollegiate Men’s Choruses.

With the ETSU Chorale, 10 Bucs Worth has performed concert tours of Austria, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Venezuela, and Costa Rica. The group performs in a variety of styles that include southern gospel, pop, jazz, and classical. They have performed twice at the White House.

12 Times a Lady is an auditioned ensemble of 10 female singers. It was formed in the fall of 2011 by Dr. Zachary Marshall as the partner ensemble to 10 Bucs Worth, and it is the newest addition to the ETSU choral program. In the spring of 2012, 12 Times a Lady toured with the ETSU Chorale to New York City, and the ensemble performed at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. They have also performed at several locations in London including the Royal Festival Hall.

The two groups will be joined by the ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band, which is not disbanding. The three groups will collaborate on several numbers.

Marshall directs both the 10 Bucs Worth and 12 Times a Lady. He also was a member of 10 Bucs Worth back when he was a student under Jenrette.

Marshall said he is leaving ETSU and the school has plans to go in a new direction after his departure.

“It is a start of a new era,” Marshall said, but there will be plenty of fans of 10 Bucs Worth and 12 Times a Lady who will want to get their chance to hear the sounds of what will soon be the past for one last time.

Piney Flats First Baptist Church is located at 100 Cherry St., just off U.S. Highway 11E. The phone number is 439-4276. General Admission tickets are $10.

10 Bucs Worth will have one more performance at ETSU’s commencement on May 11.
