Brush fires hit area, rain and thunderstorms on the way

Staff Reports • Apr 11, 2013 at 4:47 PM

Approximately six brush and grass fires have been reported in the Johnson City/Washington County area in a three-day period, according to Washington County 911.

Two brush fires were reported today. One was near Clear Springs and Happy Valley roads. The next fire was located at 142 Fairhaven Road, off Watauga Road.

Fire crews had already left those fire scenes.

Tuesday one brush fire was reported. Wednesday three fires had been reported throughout the city and Washington County.

A Washington County 911 representative said possible causes of the fires could be because of open burning that has gotten out of control.

According to the National Weather Service’s website, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the area tonight around 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. Friday, followed by showers and thunderstorms after 2 a.m.

Storms could be severe, with hail and damaging winds.

The low tonight is 56 degrees with a 100 percent chance of precipitation.
