Obama budget request a mixed bag for Oak Ridge

The Obama administration’s proposed federal budget for Fiscal Year 2014, which begins Oct. 1, carried mixed news for the government operations in Oak Ridge.
Requested funding for the Department of Energy’s environmental cleanup and science research programs appears to be down from recent years, but the work on nuclear weapons could go up — at least for some activities — at the Y-12 National Security Complex.
Some of budget numbers that affect Y-12 National Security Complex weren’t readily available, but Don Cook, the National Nuclear Security Administration’s defense programs chief, said during a teleconference Wednesday that the funding request for the Uranium Processing Facility would be $325 million.
