Carter Co. deputies foil alleged escape via river

ELIZABETHTON — A man wanted by the Carter County Sheriff's Department took advantage of the first warm days of spring to try to evade arrest by jumping into the Watauga River on Wednesday afternoon, according to Lt. Patrick Johnson.

"I don't care what time of the year it is, that water is still cold," Johnson said. The prisoner's chilly ordeal was to no avail, as Lt. Jeff Markland was waiting on the other shore, Johnson said.

Johnson identified the man as Scotty Calloway. Johnson said Deputy Billy Harrell went to Calloway's residence to serve an arrest warrant, but Calloway ran from the home and jumped in the river.

As Calloway was making his way across the river, Johnson said Markland drove to Renfro's Campground and was waiting for the swimmer.

"When he saw it was Markland waiting for him, he just gave up and walked over to Markland," Johnson said. Markland charged Calloway with evasion.
