Expect detours as Johnson City railroad crossing work continues this week

Norfolk Southern workers will be in Johnson City beginning Wednesday to complete the final paving of roads at a number of crossings downtown.
Crews are moving from Piney Flats and heading toward Jonesborough in what should be the final pass through town. Jerry Holt, who contracts with Norfolk Southern to supervise flaggers and position signage, said workers should start on Broadway Street Wednesday and move from crossing to crossing through Thursday.
Holt said motorists will see “road closed” signs and should continue to the next block -- or possibly two -- to continue in the direction they were headed. Crews will be back in Johnson City on Mon. April 15, and Tues. April 16. On these dates, workers will be off the rails in the afternoon so trains can pass, but the crossings may or may not be passable by automobile.
A “smoothing gang” will come through this weekend and the next to lay the final layer of asphalt. Holt said this crew can complete up to eight intersections in a day. In sum, all work should be complete in about two weeks, he said.
