Starving horses rescued in Hawkins County slowly recovering

ROGERSVILLE — A Hawkins County mother and daughter team who rescue neglected, abandoned and abused horses are hoping the worst is behind them for a horse they took in near death on March 20.

At the request of the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, Mollie Bird and her mother, Melissa Hull, accepted three horses and a donkey that were starving in Mooresburg because their owner couldn’t afford to feed them.

Since then, one of the horses, a palomino they’ve named “Courage,” has collapsed four times. They believe Courage is about 20 years old and his golden coat had turned white due to lack of nutrients.
