Report: Unicoi Co. man charged with kidnapping, assault after dragging girlfriend

ERWIN — A Unicoi County man is facing several charges including aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, domestic assault and aggravated burglary following his arrest Monday for allegedly dragging his girlfriend from a residence she refused to leave and threatening the owners of the residence.

Jason Adam Smith, 41, 100 White Tail Ridge, Unicoi, was charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, domestic assault, simple possession of a schedule VI drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

According to the affidavit of complaint written by Unicoi County Sheriff's Department officer Enrico Ruffolo, Smith and his girlfriend, Cheyenne Nelson, went to the residence of Dean Price on South Walnut Drive in Erwin on Monday. The report states Smith waited outside while Nelson entered the residence, possibly to retrieve clothing.

The reports states that while in the residence, Nelson advised Price that she did not want to leave with Smith "because she was afraid of him."

"During this time, Smith, realizing that she was not coming back outside to leave, became extremely hostile, violent, yelling and screaming very loudly creating a major disturbance, stating that he was not leaving without her," the report states.

According to the report, Smith approached the residence and began strike the front door and windows with his hands and feet. The report states Nelson had asked Smith to leave the residence several times and, when she opened the door slightly, Nelson entered the home, grabbed Nelson by the arm, and drug her out of the residence.

The arrest report states Nelson had fallen on the porch during this act and sustained cuts and abrasions to her one of her feet, her legs, one of her arms and her lower back. The report states Smith was temporarily subdued on the porch by Price and another person at the residence. Smith broke free, went to his vehicle, and retrieved a .22-caliber Remington rifle before again approaching the residence, according to the report.

The report states Smith was waiving the rifle around recklessly, at times pointing it in the direction of Price, threatening to put a "mushroom hole in his head" and threatening to burn down Price's home and damage his vehicles.

After police arrived and placed Smith under arrest, a search of his vehicle was conducted. According to the arrest report, a small plastic baggie containing 9 grams of marijuana and smoking pipes were found.

A $100,000 corporate bond was set for Smith, and he is scheduled to appear in Unicoi County General Sessions Court this Thursday.
