As Science Hill High School’s Lady Hilltoppers get ready to take on the Riverdale High School Lady Warriors today in the AAA state basketball championship game at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, they will be cheered on by the ’Topper Nation — including a group of students who will be traveling to support their fellow classmates.
“We had this chance last year when both teams were going and unfortunately we weren’t able to get a bus to go down there, but this year while it’s sad we don’t have our boys going, we do have one team going. You look around and every team that they play has a student section, and I think it’d be pretty cool ... to have the support,” senior Senior Marissa Jay White Quarles said.
The Lady ’Toppers will go up against Murfreesboro Riverdale today for the championship — a rematch of last year’s final. Tipoff is at 2 p.m. CST (3 p.m. locally), and will be televised on Tennessee’s PBS stations.
Riverdale bested Science Hill in last year’s final, 70-55.
Quarles said she’s excited to cheer the team on this year because she thinks it’s finally the Lady ’Toppers’ time to shine at the state tournament.
Asia Rutherford, a sophomore who is also traveling down on the bus, said she hopes having a group of Hilltoppers at the game will help the Lady ’Toppers play better and harder.
“I think having fans encourages them and makes them play better,” she said. “I think they deserve it. They’ve worked hard.”
Students kept up with the Friday’s semifinal game against Memphis Overton through text messages, phone calls, social media and school announcements.
Science Hill won 65-32.
Students who are going to the game today are glad they will be able to experience the game first-hand instead of watching it on TV or getting updates via Twitter.
“Regardless if they win or not ... I think having a crowd there will help,” Quarles said.
