HAMPTON — An early Sunday morning fire caused heavy damage to a barn located at 639 Piney Grove Road.

The barn was owned by Clarence Phillips, who told Deputy Wayne Pritchard of the Carter County Sheriff's Department that the fire was discovered by Phillip's wife at 1:30 a.m.

In addition to the damage to barn, Pritchard reported that the fire caused damage to the vinyl siding on the rear of the Phillips' home and damage to the passenger side of at 2010 Honda Civic.

Phillips said the barn did not have electricity and was only used for storage. He said the barn was unsecured, but he did not know of anyone being in the barn on the day prior to the fire.
