A man was shot in the leg Wednesday night after a resident in a north Johnson City home confronted him as he was attempting to burglarize the residence, according to Sgt. Don Shepard with the Johnson City Police Department.

Shepard said the call came in at 6 p.m. and patrol units responded to the residence at 104 White Way Drive.

“They made contact with the ... resident of the home who was holding a subject at gunpoint,” Shepard said. “The subject appeared to have broken into the residence and was in possession of some of the items from the residence. The resident ... confronted him, asked him to put his hands out, the guy put his hands in his pocket. The resident ... fired one round and it struck the ... subject in the leg. It doesn’t appear to be any life-threatening injuries.”

He said charges of aggravated burglary and theft under $500 are pending for the suspect.

Shepard said around 9 p.m. Wednesday that the suspect was seeking medical treatment for his gunshot wound.

The names of the suspect and the resident have not been released at this time, but will be released after a warrant has been served on the suspect.

Shepard said the suspect and the resident did not appear to know each other and that no one else was in the home during the confrontation.

He said about six police officers and three detectives responded to the scene and that some of the property taken from the home has been recovered.

Shepard said the investigation is ongoing.
