Staff Report • Dec 14, 2012 at 11:02 AM

Johnson City police arrested an Elizabethton man Friday on charges that he tried to return stolen merchandise to a retail outdoors store and lied to police about it.

Gary L. Whitson, 42, 611 Willow St., Elizabethton, was arrested after he brought stolen property into Mahoney's, 830 Sunset Drive, and attempted to get a refund, police said in a news release.

Whitson then gave police false information about where he got the stolen goods, police said.

Charged with false reporting and possession of stolen property under $500, Whitson was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $10,000 bond pending arraignment in Sessions Court.

On Tuesday, Johnson City police arrested Willie Jo Whitson, 42, also of 611 Willow St., Elizabethton, on the same charges from the same store.
