ELIZABETHTON — A Roan Mountain man accidentally shot himself in the leg while target shooting on Wednesday.
Curtis L. Coffey, 26, told Deputy Michael Freeman of the Carter County Sheriff's Department that he was trying to hang a target on a fence in the backyard of his Bear Cage Road residence. Coffey said his pants got caught on the fence.
Coffey tried to free his pants leg from the fence and in the process, his Mossberg .22 caliber rifle discharged a round into his right leg, just above the knee. At that point, Coffey dropped his rifle on the ground and he and his wife drove to the Sycamore Shoals Hospital Emergency Room.
