More than 2,000 books to be available at library’s sale Saturday

In the Johnson City Public Library, a shortage of books is a rarity.

In fact, sometimes they have too many, which prompts some of the library’s patrons into helping the library lighten the load.

Michelle Dorr, vice president of the Friends of Johnson City Public Library, said each year the group holds two book sales for the library, with their fall sale happening Saturday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.

“People in the community drop off books ... and twice a year when we have our book sale, we put all of those books out,” Dorr said. “Any book discarded from the library, we also put out there.”

She said while textbooks are not accepted for the sale, books of every kind, including children’s, novels, fiction, non-fiction, travel and soft and hardcover, have been coming into the library and so far they’ve collected well more than 2,000 books.

Dorr said the books at the sale vary in price, with children’s books going four for $1, paperbacks for $1 and hard-bound books for $2.

“All the money that we raise for the library goes back into the library through the children’s summer reading program, or things that the children’s department needs or the teen area needs,” she said. “We also help with anything the library may need, whether it’s helping with getting more movies or books or resources. It’s for a good cause. It definitely helps to put money back into the library to provide different things that the library has needs for that may not have the budget for.”

Bob Swanay, director of the JCPL, said the book sale is always a fun time for the library, as well as a necessity.

“One of the reasons we have to have these sales on a regular basis is because we’re very limited on storage space. We don’t have a lot of room to put these books, so we have to regularly get them out so we have room to take in the next wave,” he said.

Swanay said the quality of books donated for this particular sale Saturday will give readers a good chance of finding some hidden treasures while they rummage through the assortment.

“This looks like the largest amount of high-quality books I’ve seen for a book sale in quite a a long time, so I think this is definitely one that people should come and check out because there’s just going to be a lot of great stuff,” he said.

The book sale will be held in the Jones Meeting Center at the library, and a preview event welcoming new members to the Friends of Johnson City Public Library will be held today from 5:30-7 p.m. Individual memberships for the group begin at $15.
