A Roan Mountain man was arrested Tuesday after he huffed a substance from a can, passed out while driving and crashed into a guardrail, injuring one of his passengers, according to a Washington County affidavit.
According to the document, Derek W. Blackwell, 22, 448 Shell Creek Road, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 26, when he passed out while driving after huffing from a can of Ultra Duster.
Blackwell had three passengers in his vehicle, including his two children and one adult, Landon Duncan.
According to the document, Duncan was taken to Johnson City Medical Center to be treated for a laceration on his arm that was a result from a window shattering during the crash. The children in the vehicle were not injured.
Blackwell admitted to officers that he had been huffing the Ultra Duster from the can and that he also had taken Suboxone. He was taken to the Washington County Jail and was then taken to Johnson City Medical Center for a blood alcohol test.
Blackwell was charged with reckless endangerment, failure to take due care, violation of the financial responsibility law and driving while under the influence/child endangerment. He was being held on $25,000 bond pending a Sessions Court appearance scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.
