Sometimes one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
As the 23rd Annual Historic Tree Streets Yard Sale officially kicked off early Saturday morning, there were lots of treasure hunters out and about, hoping to spot some items they never knew they needed.
Cars lined the streets and crowds came from all entrances to the neighborhood with boxes, bags and carts, knowing that when you go to a yard sale, it’s hard to walk away empty handed.
Christina Kunisch, a Jonesborough native who now lives in Asheville, N.C., uses the annual yard sale to reconnect with friends.
“I’ve been coming 10 years. I started coming in 2002. It’s our annual girls weekend,” Kunisch said. “We have people from Kentucky and North Carolina that come and we all just kind of hang out. It’s the start of what we all think of as our holiday season. It kicks off ... Halloween and Christmas and Thanksgiving.”
Kunisch said among some of the items she had already purchased earlier in the day included a giant stuffed monkey toy for her dog, as well as a shelf.
“The prices are lower,” Kunisch said. “It’s (the yard sale) kind of changed too, since the economy’s crashed. There’s a lot more people, there’s a lot more things that are being sold. It’s really great. There’s lot of people out, lots of dogs. It’s really nice and I really like that they’ve moved it to September. It’s a lot cooler now.”
Food vendors also set up shop on one street corner, as well as an ice cream truck making its rounds throughout the neighborhood.
Judy Bright, of Hampton, said she has been to many yard sales, particularly those in the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area, but Saturday was her first time wandering through the Tree Streets sale.
“We made preparations to be here for the whole day,” Bright said.
With two huge shopping bags, Bright said she’s been very happy with her purchases of wall plaques, hats, cloth material and tablecloths.
“This is ... pretty good. This is top of the line (yard sale) that I’ve been to since I’ve been here two years,” she said. “Everybody is just so friendly. Everything’s going great. I’m really thankful to see that people are working together.”
