In locally owned restaurants, Johnson City needs more ...

Staff Report • Jun 28, 2012 at 6:54 AM

Johnson City has more than 130 restaurants, offering everything from Indian and Asian cuisine to old-fashioned Southern meals. Numerous locally owned and regional establishments are on that list, including such long-standing restaurants as The Peerless, The Firehouse Restaurant, Alta Cucina, Cootie Brown's and Taste Budz.

We've seen a surge in independent restaurants of late, with such places as Scratch, The Battery, Freiberg’s, One12 Downtown, Tipton Street Pub and Main Street Pizza opening in Johnson City.

Recently, Tupelo Honey Cafe based just over the mountain in Asheville, N.C., opened a new location in Knoxville and asked Facebook visitors to vote on which town should be next to get the regional restaurant's Southern cooking. The results in the Tri-Cities were so strong that the owners made site visits to Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol. Results are expected soon.

Does Johnson City have room for more locally owned and regional restaurants? What should be next? This week, we're asking readers to weigh in on which restaurants need to open in Johnson City. Each day, the online poll asks about a different category of food service.

Today's poll asks readers about the types of independent establishments Johnson City might need more of — Asian/Indian cuisine, breakfast places, burger joints, cafeterias, diners, fine dining, pizza parlors, soul food, Southern cooking or vegetarian food.

What should it be? Vote on our home page at www.JohnsonCityPress.com.

The results of this week's dining polls will be published in a later edition of Johnson City Press.
