ERWIN — The Unicoi County Board of Education took a step Thursday in applying for federal funds the school system will receive in the 2013 fiscal year.

At Thursday’s regular meeting, the board unanimously approved the Elementary and Secondary Education Act Fiscal Year 2013 consolidated plan and budget. The approval included the consolidation of the programs and budgets for Title I Part A — Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantage, Title II Part A — Teacher and Principal Training and Recruitment, and Title III Part A — ELL Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient Students.

Unicoi County Director of Schools Denise Brown said the budget approved by the board Thursday for these programs is preliminary and a consultant will be working with the school system before it is finalized.

“The federal money that we get, we have to fill out an application and it has to be approved by the federal program consultant,” Brown said.

This consultant, Brown said, will meet with school officials today.

Brown said Title I Part A deals with the school system’s free and reduced population and is based on how much money goes back into the schools to get resources, computers and other items. Including funds carried over from the 2012 fiscal year, the amount budgeted for this program in the 2013 fiscal year is $658,659.

The Title II Part A program deals with professional development and the training of teachers before the start of the school year and continuing development throughout the year, Brown said. Including funds carried over from the 2012 fiscal year, the amount budgeted for this program in the 2013 fiscal year is $114,688.

The Title III Part A program addresses English language learners in the school system. Brown said the system employees three full-time English as Second Language teachers who work with the county’s migrant population. The amount being sought for this program for the 2013 fiscal year is $14,029.

The board also approved the adoption of Local Education Agency No Child Left Behind goals/indicators and assurances for the federal programs fiscal year 2013 consolidated application.

In other business, the board:

Approved bids for copy paper, instructional supplies, pest control and custodial supplies.

Approved a contractual agreement with Curlee Communications and SPED.

Approved the system’s summer sports schedule.

Approved the sports budgets and inventories for Unicoi County Middle School and Unicoi County High School.
