Deadly storms: One year later

Staff Report • Apr 22, 2012 at 10:03 AM

Dallas Penley knows all too well the damage severe storms can wreak on homes and lives. A year ago this week, he lost his brother, Doug, as a tornado tore through the South Central community of southern Washington County laying waste to houses, trees and anything else in its path.

His brother was one of 13 people in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia lost to severe storms that swept through the region that day. Hundreds of families saw their lives upended.

Friday will mark the one-year anniversary of the devastation, and the Johnson City Press has revisited the communities and people affected by the storms with status reports from the scenes. Our news staff has compiled facts and figures about the storms, gathered personal accounts from the events and examined the rebuilding efforts of the past year.

Today’s edition contains the first group of articles in a four-day series.

The Johnson City Press is available at newsstands throughout the region or through subscription. Subscribers to either the print or online editions of Johnson City Press have full access to the electronic site.
