Newspapers launch series about synthetic drug concerns

Staff Report • Apr 1, 2012 at 10:52 AM

Authorities have sounded the alarm in recent months on new drugs permeating our region and readily available for purchase on store shelves and the Internet. Police and health officials say the scourge of bath salts and synthetic marijuana has grown to "epidemic" proportions, with users clogging health systems and police calls while presenting a danger to the public at large.

In a joint project, Northeast Tennessee Media Group's Johnson City Press and Kingsport Times-News jointly have composed a series of articles exploring the implications of the synthetic drug problem.

The three-day series begins in our Sunday, April 1, 2012, editions with articles about the types of drugs available, law enforcement efforts to curb sales and abuse, and community outcry.
