Niswonger Children’s Hospital doctor: Critical level of babies born hooked on drugs

A local neonatologist said the number of drug-addicted infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit at Johnson City Medical Center’s Niswonger Children’s Hospital is at a critical level, indicating more pregnant women are using drugs as their baby grows inside them.
“Drug use is nothing new among the pregnant women,” said Dr. Des Bharti, who practices at JCMC. “An average woman, during pregnancy, will be exposed to 20 prescribed medications and in addition to that may use 20 to 30 non-prescribed medications.”
