An elderly Johnson City woman was found dead Friday afternoon and her husband later died at Johnson City Medical Center after a fire in their home.
Abbie L. Young, 89, and Robert Goodman Young, 91, both of 608 Pine Ridge Road, died from their injuries.
According to Mark Finucane, Johnson City Fire Department assistant fire chief, firefighters responded to the residence, off East Oakland Avenue, at 12:39 p.m. after neighbors called 911 about smoke coming from the residence.
Finucane said three engines and two truck companies reported to the home after the neighbor’s initial call said people could be inside the residence.
He said three firefighters were sent in through the front door of the home and two firefighters entered through the basement area in the back, where they located the Youngs on the stairs.
According to Finucane, the two firefighters were able to get the couple outside where they could be treated by Washington County/Johnson City Emergency Medical Services personnel.
Don Cogan, a state bomb and arson special agent, along with the Johnson City Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was accidental and electrical in nature, Finucane said.
The Johnson City Police Department assisted with the investigation.
