Northeast State Community College expects to have more than 100 students enrolled in its teaching site at the Johnson City Downtown Centre when it opens this fall.
Classes are not being advertised right now because the building must be renovated, but the school will first offer classes for students who plan to go on to a four-year university. Renovations have not yet begun but should soon, Gilliam said.
“We don’t want to advertise and (then have to) change anything, but it appears we’ll be on schedule to start classes this fall,” NSCC President Janice Gilliam said.
These classes are in a program of study called university parallel. This fall, NSCC would offer typical first-semester university parallel courses. Subsequent semesters would see the addition of the program’s advanced courses.
The university parallel courses are essentially general education core classes. There are 41 hours worth of classes in this program in the areas of communication, humanities or fine arts, behavioral and social sciences, history, natural sciences and mathematics. Students at NSCC who complete this program will have either an associate of arts or an associate of science degree, depending on the exact courses they take.
East Tennessee State University is among the area universities that will accept a NSCC associate’s degree.
Despite class schedules not being set right now, Gilliam said the school is estimating between 100 and 150 students will attend courses at the site this fall. Those numbers would likely double for spring 2013, she said.
Gilliam had said in the past that in five years’ time the Downtown Centre teaching site could accommodate between 1,000 and 2,000 students.
Gilliam said the school would likely begin holding classes during the day and then expand to nights and weekends as time goes on.
“As we grow the site, we’ll add the second semester and move forward,” Gilliam said. “And we hope to add more classes as demand grows.”
