Johnson City police arrested an Orleans Street man early Thursday morning on a charge that he choked his girlfriend while holding their infant child.
James Powell, 26, 300 Orleans St., was charged with aggravated domestic assault and domestic vandalism.
Police went to Powell’s residence on a call about a possible domestic violence situation about 12:30 a.m.
Police said Powell was arguing with his girlfriend, punched her on the forehead and then poured a drink on her and their 2-month-old child. Police said Powell then began choking his girlfriend while the child was in her arms.
The victim told police she put the child on the floor because she felt she was going to pass out.
Police said Powell picked up the child, barricaded himself in the bedroom and broke the victim’s cell phone.
The victim was able to stop a person outside and called the police. Police said Powell came out of the room and gave the child back to the victim. He then left the residence, but was later stopped by police and arrested.
Powell was jailed in the Washington County Detention Center on $6,000 bond and appeared in Sessions Court on Thursday. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m.
