KINGSPORT — A Kingsport church sustained heavy damage in an early Monday morning blaze, which completely gutted an addition and left a large hole in the roof above the sanctuary.
Preliminary indications, according to a police report, are that the fire at Tri-City Korean Church began and spread from the outbuilding of a neighboring home, 409 Astor Street, shortly after midnight. The outbuilding was totally destroyed, while vinyl siding on the home melted and distorted from the heat of the flames. A car at the residence also received damage.
Pastor Mun-Gye Lee reports the addition at Tri-City Korean was built four years ago — and contained a piano donated to the church just two days prior. On Monday afternoon he and members of the congregation were sifting through the addition's charred remains, which appeared to yield little to nothing salvageable.
