ELIZABETHTON — One of the drivers involved in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 19E at the Betsytowne Shopping Center on Friday night was pronounced dead at Johnson City Medical Center. The victim’s name has not yet been released by the Elizabethton Police Department.

Officer Ryan Brackett said the woman was unconscious and trapped in a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier when responders arrived at the scene. She was removed from the wreckage by the Carter County Rescue Squad and transported to Johnson City.

Due to the seriousness of her injuries, Brackett said the police department’s Specialized Accident Reconstruction Team was mobilized.

During the course of the investigation, Brackett said it was determined a silver 1996 Ford F-150 XLT, driven by Troy Thompson, 47, 535 Crowe Bottom Circle, was going south on U.S. 19E in the outermost lane.

Thompson told officers that a red Chevrolet Cavalier crossed into his path. He swerved to avoid the collision, but was unable to avoid to do so. A passenger in the truck, Shannon Jackson, also said the car crossed into their lane of travel.

Brackett said evidence on the road was consistent with the statements made by Thompson and Jackson. The two were checked by Rescue Squad personnel, but they refused treatment.

During the course of the investigation, traffic on U.S. 19E was reduced to one lane in each direction.

The incident remains under investigation.
