A man meeting his ex-wife in a child drop-off was arrested Saturday after witnesses said he struck the woman and her stepfather with his car.
Jonathan Joseph James Shukto, 23, 160 Ronald St., Gate City, Va., was charged with aggravated assault and domestic aggravated assault.
The incident happened in the parking lot of Bob Evans, 2801 Boones Creek Road, around 6 p.m.
Kaylynn Pierce-Shukto and her stepfather, Leonard Irick, were there to exchange the Shuktos’ 2-year-old son. During that exchange there was an argument over some of the boy’s clothing.
A Johnson City Police officer wrote in a court document there was a physical altercation between Irick and Shukto as Shukto sat in his car and Irick stood outside the car.
During his arraignment, Shukto told General Sessions Judge Robert Lincoln he was the one who was attacked.
“The reason I was backing up is because he was choking me,” Shukto said.
When Shukto backed his car up, it struck his ex-wife as she was holding their son. The child was not injured, according to court documents.
Witnesses said Shukto then went forward and struck Irick, who was thrown onto the windshield and rode on the hood for about 10 feet until being thrown off and into a fence.
After police arrived, they located Shukto at a nearby convenience store. He had also called 911 to report the incident.
Shukto was initially held on a $101,000 bond, but Lincoln reduced it to $50,000 during the arraignment Monday. He was ordered to stay away from the victims if he makes bond.
Shukto has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Jan. 17 at 9 a.m.
