The first of a series of concerts will feature Ivy Road, a boogie woogie piano-style band, on Thursday at Winged Deer Park’s lakefront amphitheater, the venue site for the subsequent six concerts that will follow Ivy Road’s kickoff event.
“The lakefront venue is beautiful, especially in the evening,” said Mary Ann Kinch, the city’s marketing and events manager.
Kinch said they’ve brought in regional and local acts to provide a weekly summer event for the area, with the first six dates taking place each Thursday night from 7-9 and a grand finale occurring on Sept. 7 from 6-8 p.m. with a performance by the Johnson City Symphony. Kinch said each of the concerts brings in several hundred attendees and the final event could bring upward of 2,000 people.
“And it doesn’t cost a thing,” she said. “That’s hard to come by these days.”
Kinch said people should bring lawn chairs and a willingness to dance. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed on the premises, but people are welcome to bring a cooler with food and drinks to make a evening out of the affair. If they don’t want to bring their own eats and drinks, attendees are encouraged to patronize concessions that are often on hand. Another cool feature of the location, she said, is the ability for people to float out in the water next to the concert, which gives the option of alcohol consumption, if that’s their prerogative.
Although she’s not trying to bring in the same shows each year, Kinch said there are some repeats, like the series itself, because of popular demand. The goal is to change things up.
“Each year, we try to put in different talent,” she said.
