UMOJA Fest schedule

The 17th annual Umoja/Unity Festival gets under way today and runs through Saturday night in downtown Johnson City.

The entertainment schedules is as follows:



3 p.m. — Opening ceremony will start with “call to the drums” with the Rev. Vincent Dial and Zulu Connections stilt walkers from New Orleans.

3:30 p.m. — Chris Dula

4:30 p.m. — Bleu Jackson

5:30 p.m. — Demon Waffle

6:30 p.m. — Tiny (Comedian)

7:30 p.m. — Reggae Infinity

8:30 p.m. — Tiny (Comedian)

9:30 p.m. — Free Flow

Storytelling Stage

The Storytelling stage is located in the gazebo between East Main and East Market streets.

UMOJA Parade

The UMOJA parade starts at the Carver Recreation Center at 322 W. Unaka Ave. at 10 a.m., moves down Main Street and ends at the Main Stage.


The UMOJA Car Show will take place in the parking lot bordered by West Market, West Main, Windsor Way and Commerce streets. The show runs from 10 a.m-5 p.m.

3 p.m. — Open mike

5:30 p.m. — Open free band

6 p.m.— Vamp’d Up

6:30 p.m. — Tiny (Comedian)

7 p.m. — Loretta Bowers

7:30 p.m. — M.J. Beck Band

8:30 p.m. — Tiny (Comedian) with Skin Deep

9:30 p.m. — Lakeside

From the main stage, both Friday and Saturday nights periodic drawing for give-a- ways will be held. Tickets can be obtained at the Main Stage.

Boxing Venue

The James “Jazz” Akins boxing event will be held in the old JC Penny building on East Main St. The doors open at 4:30 p.m. with bouts starting at 5 p.m. There will be 20 or more bouts.

This is a paid event with tickets costing $5 for 12 years old and under, $10 for adults. VIP tables are $100. All proceeds go to support the youth.

Boxing age groups range from 5 years to 35 years old. For additional information, call Roger Hensley at 433-9022.

All events except boxing are free, but donations will be appreciated. No food, drinks or pets allowed.
