On Sunday night, Johnson City rang in the new year with icy temperatures and fresh coat of snow on the ground.

But while many prepared the champagne or climbed into bed, a small group in the warm atmosphere of Samadhi Healing Arts Center on West Walnut Street assembled early in the evening to greet the new year with calm minds and old traditions.

The night began with a yoga class and Kirtan (a sort of concert with sanskrit mantras with audience participation) led by the Appalachian Yoga Collective, with music performed by the band Nam Bhava. The group took part in a cocao ceremony that is meant to connect participants to their pure heart energy.

The night was meant to promote unity and love and connection between people and and raising good vibrations to greet the new year.
