ABINGDON, Va. – This Saturday, kids will be able to make a unique Valentine craft for free during “Art with a Heart” at Heartwood: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Gateway.
From 11-2, mosaic artist Ruth Ann Kondylas will guide children in creating Valentine mosaics on paper and wood, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The free workshop is the first “make-and-take” craft workshop being hosted at Heartwood, which plans to do more of them in the future.
“Any opportunity to share a creative process with children is essentially an opportunity for them to learn, not only about art but about the culture of Southwest Virginia,” said Debby Loggans, who coordinated the event through ’Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Network.
“Through our partnership with Heartwood, we are thrilled to bring artisans and children together to provide an activity that is not only fun, but will provide both with a different perspective to the culture of the region.”
Loggans said the idea for “Art with a Heart” and future make-and-take craft workshops grew out of successful interaction between artisans and the public through craft demonstrations and other events.
Both visitors and artisans expressed an interest in expanding this opportunity so they could interact within the creative process as well, Loggans said.
“Art with a Heart” is free to all children, and their parents or grandparents can shop or relax while the kids do their activity, which takes about 30 minutes. The event is from 11-2 this Saturday, Feb. 8, and Heartwood’s restaurant and galleries will be open. Heartwood is located at Exit 14 from I-81 in Abingdon.
